Jewish Memorial Gardens is a corporation incorporated pursuant to the laws of the Province of Ontario. The Corporation has the following Founding Members: Congregation Machzikei Hadas; Kehillat Beth Israel Congregation; The Jewish Reform Congregation of Ottawa (Temple Israel); Young Israel of Ottawa; Congregation Beit Tikvah of Ottawa and such other parties as may be required to become members of the corporation.
As of 1 July 2008, each of the Founding Members transferred to Jewish Memorial Gardens the cemetery lands that they had Notwithstanding the transfer of ownership in the lands within the Ottawa Jewish cemeteries to the Corporation, the Founding Members retain halakhic control over the use of each of their respective Areas of Control.
The Founding Members desire that the Corporation operate and manage the Ottawa Jewish cemeteries, in accordance with the Founding Members Agreement, in order to provide members of the Ottawa Jewish Community one common organization to deal with for all cemetery needs;
The Corporation, subject to the provisions of Founding Members Agreement, is solely responsible for the operation and maintenance, and all expenses associated with the operation and maintenance, of the Ottawa Jewish cemeteries.
The Founding Members of the Corporation are responsible to appoint the Directors of the Corporation in the numbers shown following each name: Machzikei Hadas Congregation (1); Kehillat Beth Israel Congregation (2); Jewish Reform Congregation of Ottawa – Temple Israel (1); Young Israel of Ottawa (1); Congregation Beit Tikvah of Ottawa (1) and the Jewish Federation of Ottawa (3). It is intended that these Directors may have the voting privileges of Founding Member Directors.

In addition to the Directors who are voting members of the Board of the corporation, the Board currently also includes two non-voting members: the Past Chair (Jonathan Freedman) and the Executive Director (Tammy Torontow). Tammy is available to handle cemetery issues during business hours 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at 613.688.3530 (Select “Option 1” to reach her). She may also be reached by e-mail address at executivedirector@jewishmemorialgardens.org. In the event of a death or an impending death, she is available at all hours, with the exception of Shabbat and major Jewish holidays.
